The Privacy Policy for DontForgetTheMilk.com
First let me start by explaining the website. I am the sole owner/operator/creator. Like I said in the story behind the website, this started as a project to help my wife out with the shopping. I actually thought up the name and was amazed to find that it wasn't already taken. So I went ahead and registered the domain name made a logo and trademarked/copyrighted everything. It's been a wild ride since then. I was developing the site and mentioned it to some friends, and it was suggested that I make the list accessible from cellphones and Palm VII's. So after getting the basics of the site working, I created the pages and modifications necessary to allow access from various wireless products. The response has been tremendous. I have received quite a few suggestions, and managed to implement most of them. This has become a lot larger than I really expected, which I am thrilled about. It validates all the work I have been putting into the site, and that is my main reward.
As far as privacy goes, I thought I had it covered, but have been asked to make it a little more clear. I will not sell the lists that are stored on the site. I would like to sell advertising to food companies or whomever will pay me for it, but I don't plan on allowing access to the lists that are created. I think that this site is specific enough in nature that demographics are really not needed. I do not collect your name, street address, phone number, or any of that kind of information. I do not like giving that type of information out myself. I keep your userid, password, optional email, and of course your list. I do have the web server logs which contain an ip address, but I keep this in case of an attempted hack. Normally I am not paranoid about those kinds of things, and have taken all the precautions I can, but I feel that the log is necessary for not only tracking down hackers, but spotting some of these before they happen. The logs are the only way of actually having a chance of catching someone if they attempt to break in. It also allows me to see if someone was even trying. I think with the events of the past few months, I can safely say that there's not a single site on the web that isn't vulnerable to some sort of attack. Every site you visit is going to have a log of what ip address went there and when. It's just a good security measure.
Since I am covering the cost of this site and would like to keep it free for you, I would like to sell advertising, but I am not a businessman. I am a programmer, so I have done things like trying out Link Exchange and some other banner programs. I have now taken all of that off.
So to sum up the privacy policy:
1) I will not sell or give out your list(s).
2) I will not sell or give out your email addresses.
If you would like to buy some advertising space on this site, and would like to reach a number of people that you know are interested in groceries and getting good deals, then please contact me. If you want to buy some sort of list from the site, don't bother. If you are a user of the site, rest assured that your information is kept with the utmost concern for privacy. I keep my shopping list here as well. I'm not just the owner of this site, I'm a member. (sorry, couldn't resist)
